IDAHO STATE PROFILE

Updated: Dec 9, 2020

I recently had the opportunity to write 36 state profiles for a large real estate company. The profiles focus on the wilderness, adventure in the outdoors, agriculture, and more. The following is my state profile on Idaho. I've honestly never been to Idaho, the research this project involved won me over! Can't wait to visit.

IDAHO

Idaho is the very definition of "wilderness!" Only Alaska and California have more uncultivated, uninhabited wild places! This pristine wilderness is left mostly unchanged, with almost all the same native plants and animals that Lewis and Clark explored as they came west through Lehmi Pass over 200 years ago.

Idaho is blanketed with the Rocky Mountains from north to south. Dozens of individual ranges like the Bitterroot which borders Montana and the Sawtooth in central Idaho make up this western side of the Continental Divide. It's these Sawtooth Mountains that beckon backpackers to their scenic vistas with crystal clear alpine lakes and scraggly mountain peaks as a backdrop. For the adventurer, Idaho's mountains offer bouldering, rock climbing, winter sports, and even challenge rafters with over 3,000 miles of white water.

Idaho boasts the largest, naturally surviving elk herd in the world! Climb high and breathe deep as you follow scrapes and wallows scouting Rocky Mountain Elk in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. The brisk clean air and beckoning solitude of the River of No Return

Wilderness exemplifies Idaho's wild side. An expedition into the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 offers unmatched hunting and fishing for outdoorsmen and women. Moose, cougar, wolf, and bighorn sheep remind us this is an untamed land.

And you've never seen your fishing rod bend like it will in the Salmon River. Chinook and Sockeye Salmon, Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Steelhead and even Sturgeon battle these waters. Idahos 26,000 miles of fly-fishing rivers and streams provide soothing sounds of rushing waters! And make no mistake, the repetition of that 10 o'clock - 2 o'clock will fill your cooler with filet's and your heart with joy.

With all those mountains you might be wondering where in the world do Idahoans produce all those potatoes. The Snake River Plain in the south is one region that provides growing space for not only potatoes but sugar beets, alfalfa hay, Austrian winter peas, and more. Dairy barns rise up on secluded farms and cattle roam ranches in the heart of breathtaking mountain ranges. The best of wilderness and agriculture unite in Idaho's diverse landscape.

From top to bottom Idaho stuns all who wander through with amazing natural features. Carved by the Snake River, Hells Canyon in the northwest is the deepest gorge in America, diving further than even the Grand Canyon. Shoshone Falls, also on the Snake River, in South Central Idaho, eclipses the height of Niagara Falls by 50 feet. And buried within the rocks and soil Idaho digs for 72 types of precious stones in places like Stanley Basin. As if the mountains in Idaho weren't gorgeous enough, the "Gem State" polishes up garnet, opal, topaz, and more to share with the world.
