Steady Is the Spray of the Sea

I grew up on Lake Huron hearing the waves wash on the shore night after night. Many days were spent watching boats, looking for Petoskey stones, and swimming in frigid waters. I've always loved the lakes and seas. I've been blessed to always enjoy them with family. Tall ships and tales of pirates and adventure easily capture my attention.
I've also read anything I can get my hands on when it comes to maritime literature. Treasure Island, Captains Courageous, Endurance, and The Old Man and the Sea to name just a few.
There's some great poetry about seafaring out there as well. I'm not sure how much room there is for poetry in our society today. Poetry takes patience to write and to read. The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner mixes poetry with seafaring in an amazing piece that I've always enjoyed and is definitely worth looking up and reading.
The way I've been able to get into the water and experience the waves and wind most has been through kayaking. What follows is a simple attempt at a poem about the awesomeness of the sea and my desire to be in it. There's honestly a little bit of jealousy written in here. Those great sailors of the past were amazing, but their feats are often too risky for me to duplicate. The sea is always calling, but I cannot always go. I hope you enjoy one of my first attempts at poetry.
